“Luck” is a two layer linoleum, in gradient green and black, printed on manufactured cotton paper.
This linocut, might seem like a straightforward depiction of good fortune. But beneath the bold greens and blacks lies a tale of unconventional belief and the bittersweet taste of freedom. The artwork, emerged from a state of groggy wakefulness.
The inspiration?
A rabbit, tired of his unhappy life, decided to amputate his own leg to use it as an amulet to attract good luck.
The same leg that had kept him tied to a stake his entire life. He was overjoyed at the feeling of freedom, not caring how much he bled. However, the paradox of finding liberation by losing a part of himself filled him with mixed emotions.
The story is both whimsical and thought-provoking. While the rabbit rejoices in his newfound freedom, a sense of paradox lingers.
Is true liberation possible through such self-sacrifice?
Though initially conceived as “Causation”, a nod to the drastic act that sparked the rabbit’s change, the title “Luck” ultimately prevailed. A tribute to the rabbit’s unwavering belief, however unconventional it may seem.
I hope you find the processs of creating “Luck” as captivating as its story, whach it here.
And thank you for joining me on this artistic journey!
