I want to share the fascinating process behind my most intrincated linocut print, “La Llorona”.
This piece holds a special place in my heart, not only for its artistic challenges but also for its cultural significance. La Llorona, the weeping woman of Latin American folklore, is a figure shrouded in mystery and sorrow.
Her story resonates deeply across cultures, and I was drawn to capture her essence through the intricate technique of reduction linocut printing.
Understanding Reduction Linocut: A Single Block, Many Layers
Unlike traditional linocutting, where you use multiple blocks for different colors, reduction linocut involves carving and printing from a single block. Each layer of color requires carving away more of the original design, building up the image step by step.
This means that once you’ve carved for a color, there’s no going back. It’s a thrilling and demanding process that results in a unique, limited-edition print.

La Llorona: A Four-Layer Transformation
For my “La Llorona” print, I decided on a four-layer reduction process. Each layer added depth, color, and complexity to the final image. You can watch the entire process unfold in this YouTube video

The Importance of Registration
One of the most crucial aspects of reduction linocutting is registration – ensuring that each layer aligns perfectly with the previous one. To achieve this, I used a simple yet effective system of registration marks.
These parts are called “Terner Burton register pins“, act as guides when placing the paper for each layer. This meticulous attention to detail is what allows the colors to blend seamlessly, creating a cohesive and visually stunning final print.

A Unique Series: 35 Copies, Each a Treasure
Due to the nature of reduction linocutting, I was able to create only a limited series of 35 prints of “La Llorona.” Each one is a unique piece of art, bearing the marks of the hand-carving process and carrying the spirit of this iconic figure.

My Interpretation: A Tribute to Latin American Folklore
La Llorona’s story varies across Latin America, but her essence remains consistent – a woman trapped in grief, forever seeking her lost children. I wanted to capture both her sorrow and her strength in my print. The flowing lines, the muted colors, and the haunting expression on her face all contribute to the evocative power of this piece.
(A special shoutout to my Mexican neighbors, who are masters of graphic arts! Your rich cultural heritage has always been a source of inspiration for me. 🇲🇽🫶🇨🇺)
