Crafting “Wise Girls”

Inspired by the three wise monkeys, ‘Wise Girls’ is a linocut print that challenges tradition and celebrates female empowerment.

I wanted to take you on a creative journey, sharing the process behind one of my recent linocut prints, “Wise Girls”.

This piece is a one-layer linocut, meaning it’s created using a single block of linoleum and a single color of ink, resulting in a striking monochromatic print.

From Digital Sketch to Physical Block

I began by sketching the design digitally in Procreate. This allowed me to play with composition, refine details, and visualize the final print. Once I was happy with the design, I printed it out and transferred it onto my linoleum block using transfer paper. This gave me a clear outline to follow as I carved.

Next, I carefully painted a thin layer of acrylic base coat onto the block. This water-based coat served two purposes:

  • Enhanced Contrast: It provided a stark contrast between the carved and uncarved areas, making it easier to see what I was doing as I worked.
  • Protected the Linoleum: The acrylic layer acted as a protective barrier, preventing the ink from seeping into the linoleum and potentially staining it.

Carving: A Dance of Precision and Creativity

With my design transferred and the block prepared, the carving process began. I started by carefully outlining the main elements of the design with my carving tools. Then, I moved on to the more intricate details, adding texture to the leaves and creating depth and dimension within the image.

For the leaves, I experimented with different carving techniques to create a variety of textures. I used a combination of V-shaped gouges, U-shaped gouges, and even some small knives to create fine lines and details.

Inking and Printing: Bringing the Design to Life

Once the carving was complete, it was time for the most exciting part: inking and printing! I rolled a thin, even layer of black ink onto the block, carefully placed a sheet of high-quality paper on top, and ran it through my press.

The moment of truth arrived as I peeled back the paper to reveal the finished print. It’s always a thrill to see the design come to life in ink! You can watch the entire process in this YouTube video.

“Wise Girls”: A Declaration of Independence

“Wise Girls” isn’t just a visually striking linocut; it’s a reimagining of a familiar story. Inspired by the traditional “three wise monkeys” motif, this print challenges the old adage of “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.”

Instead, my Wise Girls embody a powerful declaration of women’s autonomy. They see, they hear, and most importantly, they speak their minds. Their eyes are wide open, their ears are attuned, and their voices ring out with truth and conviction.

This linocut is a celebration of female empowerment, a tribute to the strength and resilience of women throughout history. It’s a reminder that women are not passive observers but active participants in shaping their own destinies. In the intricate details of their faces, the textures of their hair, and the boldness of their expressions, you’ll find a message of independence, wisdom, and unwavering spirit.

I hope this glimpse into my creative process has been insightful and inspiring.

With ink and love,
